Discovering piano
A borrowed family keyboard became the beginning of a life centred on piano.
It started with wanting to learn.
At 11, Reuben told his mum he wanted to play piano. His grandmother passed on an old keyboard that had belonged to his uncle, and he began teaching himself through online videos.
Six months later he began formal lessons. Over the next eight years he studied classical piano, completed AMEB examinations and developed the foundations that would carry him into professional music.
Jazz and improvisation
Finding his own musical voice.
In senior high school, improvising at the piano sparked an interest in jazz. Reuben began studying with a specialist jazz teacher, preparing him to audition successfully for Queensland Conservatorium.
Conservatorium and performance
Learning through performance.
Reuben completed a Bachelor of Music majoring in Jazz Piano at Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University in 2024. His performance experience spans jazz, fusion, Brazilian music, bossa nova, solo piano and regular church music.
Teaching
Discovering the joy of helping others progress.
What began with two students in high school grew into a vocation. Through private teaching and work at two music schools, Reuben discovered how rewarding it is to see students gain skill, confidence and enjoyment.
He has now taught more than 250 students over five years and currently teaches piano at Brisbane Christian College.
Piano tuning
Understanding the instrument itself.
A long-standing fascination with acoustic pianos gradually led Reuben from playing them to understanding how they work. He completed the Piano Tuning and Repair course through Piano Technician Academy and began caring for upright and grand pianos across Brisbane's south.
Why both belong together
Teaching develops the musician. Tuning supports the instrument they rely on.
Two disciplines, one relationship with the piano.
Teaching and tuning require different skills, but they begin with the same question: what would make this piano experience better?
As a teacher, Reuben listens for what will help a person learn. As a tuner, he listens for what will help an instrument speak clearly. Both are careful, practical forms of attention shaped by years at the piano.
